Welcome to the Center for Research on Military Organization (CRMO). The primary purpose of the CRMO is to: coordinate research on the sociology of military institutions, war, and peacekeeping and those who participate in these institutions; conduct basic and applied research on military organization, military members, veterans and their families; train the next generation of military sociologists; serve as a nucleus for communication among social scientists conducting research on the military through publication of research findings and sponsorship of scientific conferences; and serve as a resource for policy makers so that decisions can be informed by the most recent social science research.
Since its establishment as the Army Research Institute's Center of Excellence in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland in 1995, the CRMO has been very active in carrying out research, teaching, and outreach activities. Our faculty, staff, and students are committed to conducting research that is theory-driven and that is basic as well as policy- and practice-relevant. A wide variety of on-going activities span the range from research on the impact of military service on the life course to cooperation with the White House in support of programs for military families and veterans.
CRMO has an impressive array of experience, and we welcome opportunities to form partnerships with individuals and organizations who can benefit from our infrastructure. Our funding base is derived from a mix of university, state, foundation, and federal sources, and our skillful research and administrative staff is available to help satisfy the diverse needs of our students and collaborators.
CRMO plays a major role in educating and training the next generation of military sociologists. Outstanding opportunities exist for graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and visiting scientists.
Whether you are a prospective student, colleague, or just someone who has an interest in military organization, we would like to hear your comments and ideas. Our door is always open for on-site visits, and any of us would be glad to discuss with you details about our projects by telephone or e-mail.
